For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. ~ Galatians 5:13
It tells us that we are free from the chains of sin. However, the chains never disappear, they lay in front of us, tempting us and begging us to put them back on. Trying to convince us that this unbearable weight is nothing to worry about, that this struggle satisfies our unquenchable desires. In Romans 6:20, it states, “For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with regard to righteousness.” My takeaway from that verse is what is the point of trying to be righteous if you keep dabbling in sin. You might as well be completely evil and be a slave to sin if your desire for righteousness is not stronger than the desires of the flesh. We need to separate ourselves from the works of the flesh (Gal. 5:19) and produce and eat of the fruit of the Spirit.
And I will say this is not an easy thing to do, because we are creatures of flesh and we will always have the desires of the flesh fighting against us. We must cry to God for help and rescue and to move us away from these temptations. You cannot do this in your own strength, you’ll be like a hamster on a wheel, moving but, in reality, you have not made any progress. Full faith in the Lord is the only way to escape the desires of the flesh, and desiring the fruits of the spirit (Gal 5:22) will bring you closer to God and closer to His comfort and His peace. If you are struggling to find peace in your life, you feel the world is against you and that you have no home, trust in the fact that we are not of this world and you are not alone. We have been set apart and that God is preparing you for a life that is unimaginable and is filled with joy and community. I discovered a taste of this joy and community in my sophomore year of college when I joined Chi Alpha and finally felt at home. It’ll take discipline (Hebrews 12:11), however, the perceived pain that you think is unbearable, is far succeeded by the love, joy, and power that you will feel once you are in the Father’s arms.
Be blessed, be bold, don’t stress.
